DIVIDERS. c1800. [Five-leaf Hand Forged Brass and Iron Dividers]. 6” long. The hinge has five leaves, rather than the usual three. This was an early effort to maintain alignment of the two legs. One of the legs is a round brass pin driven into the upper part of brass leg, probably replacing a lost triangular leg.

DIVIDERS. ca 1850. Brass and Steel 3-Leaf Dividers. 4 ½” long. These dividers, like some other early instruments, have a spanner drilled flat screw head, sometimes referred to as snake-eyes. These were introduced into drawing instruments in the 1700s.

Britain. Original instructions included. Adjustable compass with a reversible tip, one end a point for use as a divider, the other end for a pencil. Overall length is 5 1/2 inches. Elaborate designs in the metal. Compass also engraved or stamped Eagle Pencil Co. New York. Pat. Dec 11, 1894. Pat. Gt. Britain.

DRAWING PEN. Elliott. c1870. [Ivory Handled Drawing Pen.] 4 ½” long. Ivory handle and German silver. Elliott engraved on handle. The firm was founded in London around 1804 when William Elliott opened a shop in London. The firm became known as “William Elliott and Sons” in 1850. In 1853 it became known as “Elliott Bros.”. It began using the signature "Elliott Bros London" in 1873 and “Elliott Bros (London) Ltd” in 1916.

PEN. K&E. c1910 Drop Spring Bow Pen. Stamped: K&E Co. NY PARAGON [and] GERMANY. 4 inches long, spring blade. A 4-inch long rod passes through the instrument serving as a handle and a needle point. This center rod remains stationary while the instrument is turned, and the pen draws by its own weight, avoiding the slipping of the needle. Keuffel & Esser was founded as a partnership in New York in 1867 by German-born Wilhelm Keuffel and Hermann Esser to import and sell drafting instruments. In 1870 they began to manufacture drawing instruments and in 1885 surveying instruments. They began their “Paragon” line of drafting instruments in 1901. Both died in 1908.

A few Cyrillic characters top and bottom of box indicate probably Russian made. 26 nickel-plated pieces including the usual plus 2 railroad ruling pens (one swivels), 23-inch beam compass, drop bow pen and pencil, detail drawing pen, curve pen (swivels), and pricker with replacement points. Plus two German silver replacement pieces (6 ¼” compass and 5 ¾” dividers) patented 1903.

Nine-piece set of German silver (a pale color alloy sometimes called electrum) and steel drawing instruments in removable top tray. Contains: 6 ¼” steel-tipped dividers. 5 ¼” dividers with three interchangeable tips (needle point, pen, and pencil). 5” lengthening tool which fits above dividers. 3 ½” compass with pen point. 3 ½” compass with pencil point. 6 ¼” drawing pen with ebony handle. 5 ¾” hatching pen with ivory colored handle and fine point. Bottom compartment is empty.

Contains: 6-inch ivory sector. 6-inch ebonized hardwood folding parallel rule with brass bars and studs. 6-inch ivory scale marked: “ELLIOTT BROS. LONDON” and “L. CONWAY-GORDON”. Also contains six brass drawing instruments including a bow pen with wing nut, a 5-inch divider with five-leaf hinge, and a 6-inch compass with five-leaf hinge, wing nut and pencil unit. The case and brass instruments probably date from c1800. The ivory scale is c1880. Elliott Bros. was founded in London around 1804 when William Elliott opened a shop in London. Includes 6” ivory sector marked “* BLEULER *” and “* LONDON *”. 6” ivory protractor with scales. 5-inch long brass and steel compass with wing nut. 6-inch ruling pen, mostly brass with ½” steel tips and wing nut. Pocket knife with bone case. 3 ½” bow pencil. 3 ½” bow pen. John Bleuler (circa 1757-1829) was apprenticed in 1771 and by 1779 had his own business at 27 Ludgate Hill. He was at the same address as late as 1826. One directory gives his name as “Blewler” and occupation as “optician”.

CHICAGO – NEW YORK - SAN FRANCISCO – TORONTO- NEW ORLEANS. Top of case stamped 1189. German silver instruments: 6” compass with interchangeable pencil and pen tips and 3 ½” lengthening bar, 5 ¾” dividers with steel points, 5 ¼” ruling pen with ebony handle, 4 ¼” ruling pen with ebony handle, 3 ¾” side-wheel bow pen, 3 ¾” side-wheel bow dividers, 3 ¾” side-wheel bow pencil, Stainless steel lead box. Missing key. Eugene Dietzgen was born in Germany in 1862, moved to the United States in 1878, and formed Luhring & Dietzgen, an engineering supply business, in Chicago in 1885. The firm became Eugene Dietzgen & Co. in 1891, and began manufacturing operations in 1893 under the name of Eugene Dietzgen Co. of Illinois. The present company, Eugene Dietzgen Co. of Delaware was incorporated in 1917. Eugene Dietzgen died in Chicago in 1929. The Dietzgen Corporation is still in business today.

Eleven pieces including 6” center wheel bow pen marked “Gramercy Import Co Germany” with pencil unit and 6” beam to increase maximum diameter of circles to 12 inches. This type construction is not often seen. 4 ½” ring head bow compass with pen, pencil, and divider points. 3 ¾” extra handle for compass pen or pencil. Screwdriver. Lead box with 3 extra leads, 2 extra points and extra thumb screws. Complete. Excellent condition.

Includes 5 ½” drawing pen; 4 ½” drawing pen; ring head bow dividers, pen and pencil; 6” dividers; 6” compass with pen, pencil, compass point and 4” lengthening bar; lead and needle box; and extra handle to convert pen point to ruling pen.
