FACSIMILE ATLAS. MAPPA MUNDI. ENGLISH VERSION. RARE. 1978. Mappa Mundi: The Catalan Atlas of the Year 1375. Size: 3 meters wide by 65 cm. high when opened. Published at Dietikon – Zurich, Urs Graf Publishing Company, 1978. Excellent condition. Embossed dark brown full leather with dust jacket. In slip case with text and portfolio containing 12 sheets of maps, text and figures on paperboard in the size of the originals. Those sheets are illuminated with gold leaf. The original was meant to be read with the north at the bottom and the maps upside-down compared to current convention. To make it easier to compare with contemporary maps this facsimile edition is shown with North to the top, placing much of the Catalan text upside down. The maps were intended to be viewed in the round, as some of the text and figures are upside-down compared to others on the maps. This is a facsimile of the original Spanish Catalan Atlas now in the Bibliothéque Nationale in Paris. Most historians attribute the map to Abraham Cresques (1325-1387), a Jewish cartographer from Palma, a seaport city on the island of Majorca. However, this authorship is not certain. Cresques was mapmaker to King Peter of Aragon. The atlas was commissioned by Charles V of France, whose envoy requested a set of world maps from King Peter, as Catalan maps were held in high esteem. The atlas is considered historically important as a record of the state of the art of geographic knowledge of the late 14th century, depicting the three-continent world as known. The atlas shows the regions and peoples of the known world along with sections related to cosmography, navigation, astronomy, astrology and planets. The portfolio consists of three parts: I. Introduction; II. Panels (the twelve sheets), and III. Transcription, translation, and interpretation of the texts and nomenclature of the Atlas. (This latter panel is a valuable aide to understanding the atlas.) Panels 1a, 1b, 2a and 2b contain texts and figures relating to astronomy, astrology, the calendar, and navigation. Panels 2a and 2b are a wheel calendar. At the center is the earth represented by an astronomer/astrologer with an astrolabe in his hand. Concentric rings depict the remaining three elements (water, air and fire); the seven planets, each with its own orbit; the twelve signs of the zodiac; and the 28 phases of the moon. The outermost ring shows the numbers of the 19-year lunar cycle used to determine the date of Easter. The four seasons frame the wheel. Panels 3a, 3b, 4a and 4b form a portolan chart of the Mediterranean area and Western Europe. Panels 5a, 5b, 6a and 6b continue the geography east from Turkey and Eastern Asia. These contain scanty geographical information but are supplemented by drawings of people and events as presented in the Holy Scriptures and by ancient writers. This facsimile edition is a limited edition of 790 copies hand-numbered in Arabic plus 40 copies in Roman numerals which were not for sale. There were 490 copies with German commentary and German translation by Prof, Dr. Georges Grosjean and 300 copies with English commentary and English translation by Prof. Dr. B. M. Charleston of the University of Berne. This is copy 704. This present English version was translated from the German edition which was translated from the original Catalan text. The thumbnail image at the right shows approximately one-fourth of Panels 2a and 2b. A rare opportunity to own the English version of this edition published in full leather covers.
