Parke-Bernet Galleries. 1950. The World-Renowned Hauslab-Liechtenstein World Global Map of 1507 by Martin Waldseemüller: The Only Known Copy of the First Published Globular Map of the Western Hemisphere and the First Globular Map on Which the Name America Appears.... New York: Parke-Bernet Galleries, 1950. 11 ½”h x 8”w. Printed wrappers. 20 pages. Double-page full-scale illustration of the map, actually 12 gores to make up a globe. The word “America” appears on an outline of South America in the three right-hand gores. This is the first use of the word ‘America’, and the first printed portrayal of the Earth as a globe. Also, for the first time, North and South America were individually distinguished and the Pacific Ocean depicted. The map was offered at auction in New York by Parke-Bernet on May 24, 1950 with a reserve of $50,000. At the time of the auction it was thought to be the only extant copy. On June 8, 2005 Christies (London) sold a copy of the 1507 map for £545,600 / $1,002,267, a world record price for any single-sheet map at auction. The map, one of four known examples, was rediscovered in the collection of a European collector after he had read a newspaper article about Waldseemüller and his map of the world. Charles Frodsham and Co. Ltd., a company that makes, collects and deals in clocks, watches, chronometers and associated items, including maps and books, bought the Waldseemüller map.

Strom, Robert F. (Intro). EXHIBITION CATALOG. 2001. Treasures Revealed from the Paul Mellon Library of Americana. Charlottesville: Virginia Historical Society, 2001. 10 ¼” w x 10 ¼” h. 232 pages. 102 items illustrated in color and described. Introduction by Robert F. Strom, Associate Director of the Virginia Historical Society. The following is an excerpt from the On-Line version of “Treasures Revealed”. “For the last half of the twentieth century, Paul Mellon was known as one of America's greatest patrons of the arts, a generous benefactor of cultural and educational organizations across the country and beyond. He is perhaps best known for his highly visible support of the National Gallery of Art and similar institutions. “Among his signal achievements, however, was one that eluded general notice, the amassing of a collection of rare books, maps, manuscripts, and drawings relating to the history of the Americas and of Virginia in particular. He bequeathed this fabulous collection to three institutions, Yale University, the University of Virginia, and the Virginia Historical Society. In all, the VHS received nearly 2,000 items, including many rare or unique titles. These constitute the most important gift of its kind in the organization's 170-year history. The new exhibition, Treasures Revealed, presents for the first time more than 100 rare books, manuscripts, prints, and objects from Paul Mellon's extraordinary collection. “Paul Mellon was a great patron of the arts, a generous benefactor of cultural and educational institutions, and a man who devoted his life to sharing the benefits of the immense fortune that he inherited. The son of industrialist / philanthropist Andrew W. Mellon, Paul Mellon was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1907. Mellon graduated from Yale University in 1929, and attended Cambridge University in England, receiving degrees in 1931 and 1938. He became a Virginia resident in 1936, establishing himself at "Rokeby," an estate in Upperville. After serving in the army during World War II, Mellon retired to a life of philanthropy. He spent more than fifty years amassing a rich collection of art, developing his library of American rarities, and breeding champion horses.”
