The book lists altitudes of approximately 18,000 sites in the U. S. and 500 in Canada. Data sources are identified. Most are railroads. Some are from early government surveys.

Gannett was an American geographer who was described as the "Father of the Quadrangle" which is the basis for topographical maps in the United States. In 1883 Gannett was one of founding members of the National Geographic Society. He served as its first secretary, then treasurer, then vice-president, and finally president in 1909.
